Ġużeppi Ruggier (alt. Joseph/Joe Rodgers/Rogers) (1829-1897)
Ġużeppi Ruggier was a sailor from Malta. In the Great Storm of 1859, his selfless actions saved the lives of 38 passengers on board the Royal Charter which sank off Moelfre, Anglesey, on her return from Australia. Ruggier tied a rope to himself, jumped into the sea and swam to the shore to create a lifeline for the people trapped on the sinking ship. For his bravery, he was awarded the Gold Medal by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in London.
