Justina Jeffreys was born to a black mother and white father in Jamaica. Her father sent her back to Britain where she was raised near Tywyn. She married George Jeffries, owner of Glandyfi Castle. Justina was the likely inspiration for a literary character in one of Thomas Love Peacock's novels.
