Robert Owen Utopian Legacy Exhibition panels. 2025
Exhibition panels from the ‘Robert Owen Utopian Legacy Exhibition’, originally held at Newtown Library in May of 2025, on the life and legacy of Robert Owen (1771-1858).
The exhibition panels describes the life, work, and legacy of Robert Owen, a 19th-century Welsh social reformer, industrialist, and pioneer of early childhood education and the co-operative movement. It traces his journey from his upbringing in Newtown, Wales, through formative influences and business ventures, to his ground-breaking reforms at New Lanark Mills, where he improved workers’ conditions and championed education. Owen believed that character was shaped by environment and education, leading him to advocate for humane labour practices and social equality. He later attempted to build utopian co-operative communities, most notably New Harmony in the U.S., which, despite failing, inspired future reformers. His legacy continues through his descendants, institutions preserving his ideals, and lasting global influence on co-operative economics, education, and social welfare.
