Caernarfon Castle from the 17th Century Onwards
This collection consists of different media concerning Caernarfon Castle, from the 17th century up until modern day. This collection was create as part of a module scheme for a cultural heritage undergraduate course where the assignment was to create an online digital collection. The aim for this collection is to share the history and culture around Caernarfon Castle with a wide range of audiences, including those who are local to the area who are interested in the local history, or anyone who is visiting the town and wanting some background information. This has been done through using 25 different items including paintings, floorplans and photographs. These items can then be organised into these sub-groups. Items that I thought represented the Castle in different aspects and events through the last few centuries were chosen. I believed that having a wide range of mediums was also needed. I believe that creating a collection based on the alter years of the Castles life was highly important, as many tend to concentrate on the earlier life of the castle.
Caernarfon Castle is located in the town of Caernarfon in North Wales. The construction of the castle began in the year 1283 under the reign of Edward I of England and took 47 years to complete and cost £25,000. Caernarfon Castle was built as a part of Edwards I circle of castles in North Wales as a retaliation against the Welsh princes of North Wales. Since the, it was become one of the greatest historical landmarks in the area, with many important events taking place over the years such as the National Eisteddfod and coronations of the royals.
