Penry Williams - Cyfarthfa Castle Museum & Art Gallery

This is a collection of the paintings by Penry Williams held at Cyfarthfa Castle Museum & Art Gallery, Merthyr Tydfil. ‘Penry Williams was a native of Merthyr Tydfil. His artistic career was developed through the patronage of William Crawshay, Cyfarthfa Castle. As a young man he studied at the Royal Academy, London, under Sir Thomas Lawrence. Within a few years he became an accomplished artist and sophisticated socialite. In 1826 he first went to Italy, and soon established himself as a British Roman artist.’ (Derrick Pritchard Webley, Cast to the Winds: the life and work of Penry Williams (1802-1885), National Library of Wales, 1997)
