Eisteddfod Chairs
This collection depicts some of the Eisteddfod Chairs held at Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales. The chairing of the bard is an important element of the National Eisteddfod, and always takes place on the Friday afternoon. A ceremonial chair is created each year for the Eisteddfod, as the prize for the best awdl (a traditional Welsh poem that follows strict conventions). The tradition of awarding a chair following a competition for poetry or music predates the Eisteddfod, with the earliest recorded ceremony dating to 1176.
