Walnut Tree Viaduct at Tongwynlais carried the Barry Railway branch line across the Taff Valley and on to Llanbradach in the Rhymney Valley. It was 1,500 feet long and 130 feet high.

The first junction beyond the viaduct was at Penrhos Junction, which provided connections to the Rhymney Railway lines from the West side of the Rhymney Valley and Senghenydd, the Barry Railway line continued over Penyrheol and Llanbradach Viaducts to connect with the Brecon and Merthyr Railway line from the Eastern side of the Rhymney Valley at Barry (B & M ) Junction.
