A postcard showing Hafod mansion and Eglwys Newydd
Description
A postcard entitled 'Hafod: a centre of great misfortunes' and showing the mansion and church before the fires which seriously damaged both. The library in Hafod mansion caught fire in 1807, damaging the building and destroying many priceless Welsh manuscripts. Following many decades of occupation, the mansion became vacant in 1946 and by 1957 was derelict and was demolished. The church of Eglwys Newydd, which contained a famous sculpted monument to Mariamne Johnes by Francis Chantrey caught fire in 1932 and the monument was destroyed.
