The stone-breaking yard, Beaumaris Gaol

Description

Stone-breaking was one form of hard labour in Beaumaris Gaol. Stones from local quarries were carted to the Gaol, where prisoners would use sledgehammers to break them into small chippings. The chippings needed to be small enough to fit through a hole in the basin which can be seen on the left.
