CROWN OF INDIA at Portland, Oregon
Description
The CROWN OF INDIA was a 4-masted sailing ship sunk on 12 June 1915 by U 35 while travelling from Barry to Brazil carrying coal. There were 23 survivors. ‘I was up the main royal yard (sail) when the first ‘warning’ shot passed through the topsail. We got safely into our lifeboats. Our ship went down stern first with full sails set and it was a fine spectacle’. A Japanese sailor said: ‘we could save nothing but ourselves and the ship’s cats had to perish’. (A crew member’s story).
