Llanfair Road tollgate, Welshpool, c. 1880

Description

Llanfair Road tollgate, which controlled one of the turnpike roads serving Welshpool, pictured around 1880. This was on the road to the west out of Welshpool towards Llanfair Caereinion. The tollhouse here is a rather elegant structure, with attractive lattice windows and detailing. A small pony cart waits at the gate and children are watching the photographer with great interest from behind the pedestrian gate.
