Wales international goalkeeper's shirt, worn by Alf Sherwood, vs England, 1956-57

Description

Footballer Alf Sherwood was born in Aberaman in 1923 and gained 41 caps for Wales between 1947 and 1957. At club level he played for Cardiff City over 350 times and made over 200 appearances for Newport County. He also played for Aberaman Athletic and Barry Town.
Usually a defender, Sherwood was also the stand in goalkeeper for both club and country because substitutes had not yet been introduced to the game.
Sherwood was inducted to the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
