The boys are still well and John Owens, having now recovered, has joined them.

They have moved seventeen miles since his last letter and have set up camp near the town of Nicholasville, Kentucky. The enemy were in this area last month but were routed by the soldiers.

John mentions once again the death of Henry Jones; he has worried a great deal since hearing of his family's grief.

They have passed the location of three battles where everything was broken and the traces of bullets were in the trees. John has heard that the rebels escaped towards Tennessee and that they will soon be following them there.
John has seen three hundred rebels who had escaped and who were in a very sorry state with hardly enough clothes to hide their modesty. He has heard that hundreds of them are deserting every week.
He hopes to send his pay home soon and ask his parents to send him some stamps.
