Letter from Corporal John Griffith Jones to his parents in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, 18 January 1863 [page 1 of 4]

Description

John is worried that his parents do not receive his letters as the mail boat does not leave at regular times. He tells his parents that they have blown up the old fort and have returned to the Mississippi. They are at present in Napolion[?] waiting for further orders.

He would like to receive the copy of 'Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper' which will include a picture of the battle at Fort Hind as he saw the artist in the top of a tree as they were retreating to the woods for a rest.

John writes that the Captain, during the heat of battle, turned his back and ran, and that the Lieutenant swore and took his place. He also mentions that half of the soldiers are ill and that Jonah Jones has been suffering from yellow fever but is getting better.

John thanks the Lord that he has not yet been struck down with any fever.
