Dai Dower was born in Abercynon in 1933. In 1952 he became Welsh Amateur and Flyweight champion in 1952 and represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games of that year. In October 1954, having turned professional in the previous year, Dower became Empire Flyweight Champion, and then in 1955 he won the vacant British flyweight championship by beating Eric Marsden. In March 1955 Dower beat Nazzareno Gianelli, of Italy, to win the European flyweight title. In March 1957, Dower made an unsuccessful challenge for the world flyweight title, being knocked out in the first round. Shortly afterwards he relinquished his British title.
