A child sits next to bags of coal from Merthyr Vale Colliery in Aberfan in the weeks following the disaster

Description

The coal dug at the Merthyr Vale colliery and others in the area, led to the growth of villages such as Aberfan. The majority of families in the village were linked to the coal industry and lived in the shadow of the slag tips every day. Little did they imagine that they would one day come crashing down on their loved ones.
