Chapter 8 Strikes, Belfast General Strike and Defence of The Realm Act

Description

This is episode 8 in a series of podcasts that seek to explain and place into a global context the Race Riots in Wales in 1919. As the war came to an end strikes became increasingly more common as the Triple Alliance of Coal, Rail and Docks unions started to become stronger. In 1919 there was the Belfast General Strike. This was in the same month that war for an independent Ireland started. The strikers brought electricity and transport to a halt and Government reacted by using The Defence of the Realm Act to change the law and make such strikes illegal.
