Manual Fire Engine, Newsham Type, bought by the Corporation of St. Albans, 1733

Description

Believed to be the oldest surviving fire engine in the country, it was purchased by the Corporation of St Albans in 1733. They were directed to buy one 'large' pump and one 'small', this being the small one, at a total cost of £40. It later saw service in the house of Alderman Francis Nichol, who died in 1778. By 1832 it was in service in a Kent brewery, and was used to tackle a fire in Hatfield House in that year. Presented to the Fire Brigade in 1903, it was kept at St Albans Fire Station until it was 'scrapped' in 1963. It was then acquired and restored privately.
