Letter from Mihangel ap Iwan to his parents, the Rev. and Mrs Michael D. Jones, and his sister, Myfanwy, 19 June 1898 [page 1, image 1 of 2]

Description

Mihangel ap Iwan begins this letter by noting that he has already written to his brother-in-law, Professor Thomas Rhys. He heard about the death of his sister, Mair erch Iwan, on 4 June 1898, the day before his birthday. He read the news in the 'Eryr' and received their letters the following day. Mrs York was upset when she heard the news of Mair's death. She has lost her twin sister and two children, a son and a daughter. Every Sunday morning, she and her husband visit her son's grave, and Mihangel intends to accompany them in the near future. He tells his parents and sister that they shouldn't worry too much because everyone must leave this world sooner or later, but he admits that it is difficult for those who mourn for those who have departed before them. He wishes that he was in Wales so that he could console them. It has been a week since Llwyd left for Rio Negro to fetch equipment which he had left in Choelechoel and Valcieta. Llwyd's family are well and they are still in the Welsh Settlement. Llwyd sent a letter to his parents before leaving for Rio Negro, and Mihangel has sent two since he heard that Mair had passed. He was glad to hear that 'little Mihangel' was coming along well.
