Martin Underwood at the water mill, Cwm Hyfryd, Chubut, 1893

Description

Martin Underwood, son of John Daniel Underwood and Emelia Scott, was born in the state of Buenos Aires in 1863. The family originally hailed from Birmingham. He came to the Chubut Valley in 1880 (possibly as a result of his connection with John Murray Thomas: he married Sarah Ann Griffiths, John Murray Thomas's sister, in 1886). Underwood and his wife moved to Bro Hydref (Cwm Hyfryd) in October 1891. He worked as a government official and representative, and also as a justice of the peace.

Photograph taken by John Murray Thomas (1847-1924).

Martin Underwood's wife, Sarah Ann Griffiths, born in Aberdare 27th September 1861, was the sister-in-law of John Murray Thomas, not his sister. She came to Patagonia in 1875 with her older sister Esther, the wife of Hopkin Howells (1851-1941).
