'Black Eye' (Llygad Du), River Chubut, Patagonia

Description

In 1888, a group of Welsh settlers journeyed from the Chubut Valley to Cwm Hyfryd, in the foothills of the Andes. They had already visited the area and had decided that it was a suitable place to establish a new settlement. The aim of the expedition in 1888 was to build a road, in preparation for the families who would eventually settle in Cwm Hyfryd. According to Llwyd ap Iwan, it was at this spot (later named 'Llygad Du' or Black Eye) that William Hughes's spring cart overturned, giving him a black eye.
