Shark and Whale - Article from The Cambria Daily Leader, 1913

Description

A newspaper article from The Cambria Daily Leader, published on 01/11/1913, describing the stranding of a shark and a whale at Penclawdd, which were subsequently killed by local cockle fishermen.

The clipping reads as follows: "PENCLAWDD FISHERMEN KILL UN-WELCOME VISITORS. Considerable excitement was caused in the Penclawdd district quite recently when a whale and a shark were washed ashore by the tide. The discoveries were made by several fishermen, who were at the time on the look-out for cockles, and it can be imagined that they were extremely surprised when they saw these monsters in shallow waters on the foreshore. A cry was given, and with hay forks the two fish were killed. The shark, it might be said, made several attempts to attack the men."
