On 2nd June 1949, in the course of excavating for a new housing estate at Neath Abbey Road, the site of the Roman fort of Nidum was discovered. This fort, on the main Roman road from Caerleon (Monmouthshire) through South Wales, is mentioned in the Antonine Itinerary. The fort dates back 1,900 years to about AD 100. The foundations of two gateways to the fort have been preserved as ancient monuments.
