Minstrel shows were a form of popular entertainment from the early 19th century until well into the 1970s. These shows mostly involved white male performers in blackface. While they had a distinct impact on popular music, dance and other aspects of popular culture, they were founded on the comic enactment of racist stereotypes and exploitative and racially offensive.
