Medieval macehead from Dryslwyn Castle

Description

This copper alloy macehead was recovered from a cesspit in Dryslwyn Castle.

A native Welsh castle occupied by the princes of Deheubarth, Dryslwyn was taken by the forces of King Edward I in 1287. Rhys ap Maredudd, lord of Dryslwyn, escaped the castle's fall, but he was eventually betrayed and executed in 1291. Dryslwyn was later surrendered to Owain Glyn Dwr in 1403 before being retaken by English forces who subsequently looted and destroyed parts of the castle.
