Talygarn Miners ‘Rest Home’ near Pontyclun [1936]

Description

These images were sent to us by Jeff Alexander of his grandfather, Dafydd Alexander of Abercraf, at a 'Rest Home' near Pontyclun. Jeff said, "In the group photo, my grandfather is seated on the far left with his hands on his knees. In the other photo, he is seated. He was born in 1865 and died in 1953. So when these photos were taken, he would have been aged 70/71. I know he worked underground in Abercraf into his 70s, so perhaps this was a well-earned rest before retiring (though a postcard home and the stick suggests he might have been convalescing). The miners at the time could move around the pits depending on demand (my grandfather, though from Cwmgiedd/Abercraf, spent time working in Seven Sisters and the Aberdare/Rhondda area). It is safe to say that he will have worked at Abercraf Colliery."
