The photograph shows a large group of workmen around Major David Davies, later Lord Davies of Llandinam, chairman of the Ocean Coal Company, together with members of his family during a VIP visit to the pit. Deep Navigation was so-named because at the time of sinking, (1872-8) they were the deepest shafts in the coalfield.
