1931 Disarmament Memorial by the Welsh League of Nations Union (WLNU)

Description

The WLNU's 1931 Disarmament campaign followed on from its high profile petitions throughout the 1920s (started with the 1923 Women's Peace Appeal to America). This memorial was submitted to the World Disarmament Conference meeting in Geneva from January 1932, and contained resolutions passed by churches Wales-wide on Remembrance Sunday, 8 Nov 1931. Presented to WDC Chair Arthur Henderson, the memorial was inscribed:

"AFFIRMATION AND RESOLUTION ADOPTED, BY THOUSANDS OF CHURCHES IN WALES AND MONMOUTHSHIRE ON ARMISTICE SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1931. PRESENTED TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE FIRST GENERAL DISARMAMENT CONFERENCE, 1932-The Rt. Hon. ARTHUR HENDERSON, P.C."

This high resolution image of the memorial binding appears within WLNU Archives now held at the National Library of Wales. It is not yet known whether the Memorial itself remains in Geneva, or whether it might have been retained by Arthur Henderson himself... a whole peace campaigning 'Hidden History' awaiting uncovering!
