Cresset lamp, Nevern Castle
Description
Cresset lamp unearthed during the archaeological digs at Nevern Castle 2008-2018 by a team under Dr Chris Caple of Durham University. Recovered from the rock-cut ditch at the east side of the site.
The bowl would have contained animal fat with a wick and provided a weak flickering light.
The date of the lamp is uncertain. It could have come from the 12c when the Castle was in use; or it may have been later, discarded from farm domestic waste.
