Buckley & "Talk of My Town"
Description
For many years a respected member of the community of Buckley, North Wales and a Flintshire County Councillor, Neville Phillips and all he represented was grounded in the values and social traditions of his town and it's principal citizens. In this clip, Neville chats to local community observer and media-archivist, John Butler about recollections of his formative years.
Neville tells of the times when the annual "pantomime" -an amateur -but lavish- production staged by local culture champion, Dennis Griffiths- was one of the highlights of the town's festive calender. And of an era when everyday conversations in Buckley's schools, churches and workplaces were commonly conducted in an inimitable and colourful local dialect.
Note:
Dennis Griffiths authored two books, "Out of this clay" (1960) & "Talk of My Town" (1969) Largely biographical, both volumes enjoyed a huge readership in their day. In modern times, long after the demise of clay-pits, pottery kilns & brick-works, these hard-back publications have become widely regarded as essential resources for any with an interest in the people and industrial heritage of the Flintshire town of Buckley.
An example of the "Buckley" dialect may be heard in this reading of Dennis Griffiths's creative interpretation of the story of, "The Prodigal Son".
