Digital Story from the Bawso Stories Project. In this story, Madi describes a memory of dropping a heavy coal iron on her foot as a child in Pakistan that she thought might be a toy. It was the only one in her village, and she was fascinated by it. This story was inspired by a visit to St Fagans National Museum of History.

English transcript: It’s the only one in our village, coal iron. It’s only my grandpa’s house. It is too much heavy. One time, when I saw it, oh, what is this? It’s an iron for pressing the clothes and everything. Okay, it’s too heavy. And when I carry, and it’s laid down at my foot and I am crying. I am very naughty in childhood. And it is too heavy. I drop it on my foot and I am crying and my mum is like, too much shouting at me. What happened? You know it’s not for you. It’s heavy. Why are you putting this? Oh mum, I am just checking what is this, I’m sorry mum. I have really no idea this is an iron, because it is totally unique and I only first time saw, what is this? I think it’s like a car, maybe it’s a toy and then playing with it.

Seriously when I am touching it, it is too much heavy and drop on my foot. Because I am a child, this happened at 11, 12. This happened at my family gathering in grandpa’s house. Everybody is coming and you know, child is very naughty and then it is happening and everybody turned to me, oh what happened, what happened? I am just crying and my mum just shouting, what happened, what happened? And then I’m crying and then it's just a bandage and relax. It was maybe my first cousin’s birthday. It’s all family members, like uncle families, aunty families, oh everybody is just what happened, what happened? And my mum is running, oh what happened?

You know, when I saw the same iron in the St Fagans Museum, I just said no, no, maybe once again broken if I fall down and no, no, no, and I just see this iron… it’s a good memory because once again, back to my childhood and my grandpa’s house and everybody is coming. Everything is, everything is memory from childhood, and I am so happy.
