Annie's Story "Woollen Skirt in Kenya"

Description

Digital Story from the Bawso Stories Project. In her story "Woollen Skirt", Annie describes how woollen skirts from abroad were popular among teenage girls in Nairobi when she was growing up. The story was inspired by seeing woollen clothes at the National Wool Museum.

English transcript: There was not much in that building, it was just the wool, but it gave me a memory of the skirt. Wool was in fashion back when I was growing up. It was hot but that was the thing we could wear to get a boyfriend. Yeah, yeah, very expensive. So we are going to various centres, somewhere where clothes come from outside of Kenya and they were put somewhere, people buy and sell it to other people.

So we had to go every Saturday, it was very uncommon to find a woollen skirt, woollen things. So when I saw that skirt I remembered the first time I put a woollen [skirt]. I was so happy, then when my mom discovered that I went to see the boyfriend, I was in the secondary school, I was beaten and my mother threw the woollen skirt away and told me you will never wear it again. Our parents were very strict Comparing with nowadays, the discipline was there, but not anymore.
