Double-Sided Antislavery Seal Set into a Fob (c. 1830)
Description
This double-sided fob shows the design of a kneeling, enslaved Black woman in shackles surrounded by the inscription 'AM I NOT A WOMAN AND A SISTER' carved into the black gem, and a corresponding image of a Black man with the inscription 'AM I NOT A MAN AND A BROTHER' carved into the white. The design was originally created in the 1780s for the Wedgwood company and was quickly adopted as an emblem of the British abolitionist movement. Despite its antislavery commitment, the wide spread of the image over the following century contributed to the close association of Blackness with oppression and subservience.
This gilded metal pendant would have been worn as a piece of jewellery and used to stamp wax seals and so express the sender's commitment to the cause.
The item was recorded at a Diversity Project workshop in Wrexham on 9 February 2024.
