John Hughes established the Ironworks and town of Hughesovka (modern day Donetsk) in Ukraine in the 1870s. He settled there with his wife Elizabeth and several of their children. His son Arthur David married Augusta James, and had five children, including Ida and Elizabeth. Elizabeth married Brinsley Nixon, and they had three children. The family returned to the UK in 1917.
