Short conversation with Noel Morgan, Dairy Farmer, Foelcwan Farm, Carmarthen
Description
Noel Morgan, a Carmarthenshire farmer, remembers some of the milk churn lorry drivers that became friends over the years and shares some milk churn anecdotes.
Recorded in Carmarthenshire Young Farmers Rally, with Noel Morgan, Foelcwan, Carmarthen. Noel has agreed to speak with us about the milk stand project. Noel starts off by apologising as his stand was demolished by the council back in the 1960s but he can talk about the lorry drivers and characters surrounding the milk stands.
When the milk tankers took over, Noel remembers the milk churn lorry still came to collect the churns after the tanker had been, as no one had informed the churn lorry driver.
Noel remembers milk being returned as it was sour and his father disputing this fact as it was probably sour as had been picked up too late.
Stories about characters on the lorries, you got to know the drivers like family and they made sure that they collected your milk correctly.
Sometimes the farmer would forget to remove shoes, bread or a fish from the churn before filling it. Fortunately the creamery had machinery to catch rogue items before the milk went into the big tanks.
Happy memories of the drivers, who helped us and became friends. Now the tankers come and you don’t see the driver as they come at night to empty the tank, and the tank is washed my machine so you have a clean start in the morning
Community isn’t what it was.
Some stands were driven into, others knocked down by reversing lorries. 90% of the time it was funny as usually because drivers were not looking where they were going, but they were not distracted by the mobile phones of today.
