Chapter 6. 'Moving up the Liri Valley' Frederick John Kingdom's Memoirs
Description
Chapter 6, 'Moving up the Liri Valley' from Fred Kingdom's memoir 'Looking Back Over Time'. As the Germans retreated, Kingdom’s unit advanced through the Liri Valley [Valle del Liri], facing strong resistance, especially from elite German units like the Parachute Regiment. Life became a cycle of early starts, long days, and minimal rest. He described the daily routine of tank crews, including cooking, sleeping, and enduring fatigue. Key events included: Shelling near Arce, where Kingdom narrowly avoided injury; Heavy fighting near Rome, with intense machine gun fire; Liberation of Narni, where locals welcomed the troops; A near-death experience in Perugia, when a German machine gun opened fire just ahead of him; Continued advance through Arezzo and up the Arno River toward Florence, despite difficult terrain for tanks. A major operation near Latrina involved crossing a mined riverbed and forming a bridgehead. Kingdom’s tank advanced under fire, and he witnessed the destruction of a lead tank and intense German counterattacks. His tank later supported infantry on a wooded hill, but the terrain proved too difficult, leading to a chaotic retreat. In a dramatic moment, a tank overturned, releasing phosphorus smoke and trapping the crew. Kingdom helped rescue them and cared for a wounded officer. Exhausted and alone, he eventually re-joined his unit and collapsed into sleep in a ploughed field.
