Jennette Evelyn Evans was born in Merthyr Tydfil in 1850 and emigrated in 1856 as a child with her parents who were converts to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She would later marry David O. McKay, whose family converted in Scotland. He would become worldwide president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, but returned to Merthyr Tydfil to both dedicate the local Latter Day Saints church building and to unveil this plaque.
