Two Early Views of Newtown, John Owen, c.1865

Description

These stereograph images were taken by John Owen who established his photographic studio in Broad Street in 1862. Image 1 is a view of Broad Street, taken just outside Owen's studio at number 19. The building at the end of the street was the original shop of Pryce Jones, the early pioneer of mail order, whose name appears above the door. Image 2 from The Bryn above Crescent Street and looks down across the Long Bridge and on to Broad Street. The tall chimney at centre left marks the location of the Union Street Flannel Factory. Like many similar buildings in the town, it was originally built as a handloom weaving factory in the 1830s but was converted to steam power shortly before this photograph was taken. These two photographs represent the earliest photographic images of Newtown in existence
