Royal Welsh Warehouse Sports and Musical Festival 1907
Description
Newtown had hosted an annual sports day since 1875. At that time it was held under the patronage of the Earl of Powys and the Hon. Lord Sudley of Gregynog. But, by the 1880s it benefitted from the patronage of Pryce Jones who graciously allowed his Dolerw estate to be used as the venue. By 1887, with his award of a knighthood from Queen Victoria, it was becoming an increasingly grand affair, with not only sports, but brass band and other musical competitions. To oversee the festivities, a special committee was formed - The Royal Welsh Warehouse Sports and Recreation Committee - which soon became the company’s recreational club with its own sports field, the Recreation Ground, which still exists to this day. This souvenir booklet of 1907 captures some of the excitement of this important annual event in Newtown’s life, which attracted competitors from a wide area of Wales and England.
