The catholic church of Our Lady Star of the Sea was built around 1939to a design by an Italian architect, Giuseppe Rinvolucri, using reinforced concrete. Its dedication carries tribute to sailors lost at sea. The roof is designed to resemble the hull of a boat, and the windows in the crypt port holes.
It has been described as 'one of Britain's most avant-garde churches'.
