Kate Roberts in the garden, c.1980
Description
Kate Roberts was one of Wales' best known prose writers. The daughter of a slate worker and his wife, she was born in Rhosgadfan in 1891 and had three brothers, Richard, Evan and David. During her life, Roberts wrote some of Wales' best-loved fiction, often depicting the hardship of rural life in the slate working areas of north Wales. She and her husband, Morris T Williams, bought Gwasg Gee, the Denbigh-based publisher, in 1935 and published the Welsh language newspaper 'Baner ac Amserau Cymru'. Kate Roberts died in 1985 and is remembered as 'Brenhines ein Llên' - 'Queen of our Literature'.
