Born in Glanconwy in 1888, Robert John Jones moved to Abercynon where he worked as a miner. He enlisted on 4 January 1915, and during his four years of service he sent numerous postcards to his wife Catherine - some from Wales while he was training and many from Ireland where he was sent to recuperate agter being wounded in France in 1915.
