Letter re Archie Lee from D Company, Machine Gun Corps, July 1918

Description

This letter was received by Archie Lee's family following his death on 10 April 1918. His father, Alfred Lee, had written to ask for information about Archie's death. Transcript: Dear Sir, I have just received your letter of July 18th enquiring as to the fate ofyour son, Corp. Lee. I have instituted enquiries & find that he was killed on April 10th. He was killed instantaneously by explosion ofa shell & suffered no pain. I sincerely trust that this little information may be of some comfort to you. I was not with the company at the time & there is no officer with us now who was present at the time of your son's death. This would be the reason why you had received no news from this side. I am extremely sorry that I am not in a position to give you any more information because I, through bitter experience, know what it means to lose dear ones on the field of battle. May God grant you the strength of his support in your distress. I am, Yours sympathetically, W. Richards
