Emperor moth
Description
The Emperor moth, Saturnia pavonia are wide spread through Britain and Ireland and feed on bramble and heather. The eggs are laid in batches around the stems of the caterpillar's food, mainly heather, hawthorn and blackthorn but my moth laid it's eggs on grass on my lawn. The eggs hatch in 10 - 15 days. I saved this one from the lawn mower and it was marvellous to experience all the different stages.
