Pencerrig Hotel gardens and stables in the 1960s and 1970s

Description

A selection of photos showing the garden around the hotel from late 1960s to 1977 when Pencerrig was owned by Margaret Carrel and her son, Geoffrey.  Much of the design remained as it was when Clara Thomas owned the house.  However, an outdoor swimming pool was installed next to the lower driveway and the original rose garden.  The rose garden had a central sundial and was between the pool and the rhododendrons to the north of the house; it was replaced with an enclosure containing ornamental pheasants in the mid 1970s.  The roses were transferred to beds on the main lawn in front of the house.

Lawns and gardens were tended by the Carrel family themselves and, on a part time basis, by our neighbour Ivor Gould who lived at East Lodge.  As a young man, Ivor had been employed on the estate in this capacity and his knowledge was invaluable.

The front door faced North overlooking the stables and the lake beyond.
