My dear Gordon
How are you & Emily? You gave
an illusory (but not binding) promise to write
when you last wrote. I should have written, but
I was doing that anthology & finishing the vile Houses
& Haunts book & really doing nothing. We have
been here since early August enjoying fine weather
and stupidly wandering about the town & not writing
poems like all those London bards. What makes me
write this moment is the chance of being near you
about September 10th. I have promised to write
an article for the English Review after going round
Birmingham, Bradford, Newcastle & other towns
& hearing what people say about the war. Now
I might - if I knew you were free - come on
to you for a few days & write the article at your
house & then have still a day or two when it was
finished. Will you tell me if this is possible?
Meantime, any northern newspapers might be
useful to me that may reach you, so that if you
have more than you need for fire lighting will you
put them aside supposing I am to come? I have
no other work.
With our love to you two
Yours ever
Edward Thomas
