The old Cwmystwyth grain mill
Description
These photos show the history of the old Cwmystwyth corn mill. The building is associated with the Howells family who came to Cwmystwyth from Montgomeryshire at the end of the 17th century to work in the lead mines. It was used as a corn mill until the middle of the 19th century but within a decade the lead mines went into decline. As a result of this many lead miners, includiing members of the Howells family, moved down to the Southh Wales valleys to work in the coal mines. One member of the family was killed in the Cilfynydd Disaster of 1894 along with Richard Herbert, another young man from Gwmystwyth. Today (2026) nothing remains of the old mill – it has completely disappeared.
