Old Cottage and Houses, Kidwelly Castle Gatehouse, 1900’s
Description
Photograph of the Old Cottage and the row of houses leading up to the gatehouse of Kidwelly Castle. The house in the foreground may date back to the medieval period, while the adjoining properties appear to have been constructed later. At the far end, set against the gatehouse wall, stands the Boot and Shoe Public House.
Today, the Boot and Shoe is the only remaining structure in the scene, the other buildings having been demolished to allow for road improvements. It is worth noting that the Boot and Shoe has likely occupied this location for several centuries; an eighteenth-century photograph survives showing the public house as a single-storey building.
