Statuette of Kali

Description

Brass statuette of Kali trampling an enemy underfoot. Figure has tongue sticking out of mouth, four arms raised, on a plinth.
Identified as Kali, the goddess of destruction. She is invoked by the Hindu soldiers before going into battle. Kali is the wife of Siva. Kali is Devi, the goddess of Small-Pox in another guise. 1000 goats per month are sacrificed to her at Kalighat temple. Human beings were formerly sacrificed to her. Kali is sometimes called Kali Matha, meaning small-pox. (Taken from Text at time of Acquisition)
