Valleys Kids' Mission Incredible Bike Ride 2005

Description

Valleys Kids' Mission Incredible Bike Ride was a huge success.

Young people from Penygraig, Penyrenglyn and Rhydyfelin cycled the length of the country from Carnarfon to Merthyr, an enormous challenge which was completed with huge enthusiasm.

The first leg of their fantastic journey was joined by Roger Thomas, Chief Executive of the Countryside Council for Wales, and Alyn Ffred Jones AM. The sun was shining and there were lots of smiling faces all round at the end of a successful day of cycling.

The second day saw the cyclists being met by the vibrant sounds of the Samba Band as they made their way into Barmouth after a hard mornings cycle ride. The Mayor of Barmouth was also there to greet them on this sunny day where lunch was provided by Danny Jones, Communities First Coordinator for the area.  Soon the rain began to fall but this didn't dampen the spirits of our cycling team.

The final leg of the journey ended with a celebratory lunch at Valleys Kids' Penygraig Community Project. Here the Mayor of Rhonda Cynon Taff welcomed the team home and presented each individual with a certificate for their outstanding achievement.

Reece, 14, said "Over the last 5 days I've really enjoyed myself, the bike, hostels, staff and support has been fantastic. I've met new friends and got to know more about them. I haven't had any problems with the bike or riding. I hope to do something similar next year."

The exciting journey was all caught on film by Valleys Kids' very own film crew of young people. The film was premiered at Valleys Kids' Garden Party at Little Bryn Gwyn, our fantastic residential centre in the Gower. There was an exhibition of the beautiful watercolours painted by the young people on their journey through the breathtaking scenery of the Welsh countryside.

The Mission Incredible Bike Ride was made possible by the support and funding of the Countryside Council for Wales, Sport Relief, an initiative of Comic Relief, registered charity 326568, Sefyliad: The Community Foundation in Wales, Griffin Windows and Arts & Business New Partners.
